Optimizer

What Is an Optimizer in DFS?

Last updated October 12, 2026 by Ship It Nation

An optimizer is software that builds DFS lineups within a site's salary cap and roster rules. It uses projected fantasy points, your settings and, in some tools, simulations to select combinations for a chosen goal.

Why It Matters

An optimizer solves the lineup-building problem you give it, not the uncertainty of what will happen in games. Maximizing projected points is different from maximizing your chance of winning a tournament. Your projections, stacking rules and exposure limits, which control how often players appear across your lineups, shape the results.

Example

Say you want 20 MLB tournament lineups. You require at least four hitters from the same team, exclude hitters facing your pitchers and limit each player to eight lineups. The optimizer searches for combinations that satisfy those settings and the site's rules. You review the results and discover one team dominates your stacks, so you adjust your team limits before rebuilding.

Pro tip

Build a small test batch first. Check which players and combinations repeat, and investigate why before increasing the lineup count or changing settings.

Common Questions

Do you need an optimizer to win at DFS?

No. You can build competitive lineups by hand, especially when entering only a few. An optimizer becomes more useful when you need to compare many combinations or manage dozens of entries, but it still depends on your inputs and judgment.

Does an optimizer give you the highest-scoring lineup?

No. A projection-based optimizer searches for the best lineup under its inputs and constraints, not the lineup that will score the most in actual games. A hindsight optimal uses completed results, which you cannot know when building before lock.

Why do optimizer lineups look like everyone else's?

Similar projections and settings often favor similar combinations, especially when obvious salary bargains exist. Stacking rules, player limits and alternative scoring assumptions can change your output, but they do not guarantee uniqueness. Change settings for a clear strategic reason, not simply to make the lineups different.
