What Does Contrarian Mean in DFS?

A contrarian play or lineup is one built around choices most of the field will not make, such as low-owned players, unpopular teams or an unusual salary structure.
Why It Matters
Being contrarian only pays when the unpopular choice still has a real path to a big score. Different for its own sake just adds losing lineups. Most winning tournament lineups mix a few popular plays with one or two well-chosen contrarian spots.

Example
Say the two highest team totals on an MLB slate are drawing most of the stacking ownership. A contrarian lineup might stack a team implied for 4.8 runs facing a pitcher who has allowed hard contact all month, at under 5% ownership. If that offense outscores the popular stacks, you gain ground on every lineup built around them, though the rest of your roster still decides your finish.
Pick one or two contrarian spots per lineup and ground each in a real reason. The rest of the roster can look like the field.

Should you be contrarian in small-field contests?
Less so. In a contest with 20 or 100 entries, a lineup of good, popular plays often wins. The larger the field, the more you need something unique, because thousands of other lineups may share your core players.
How contrarian should a GPP lineup be?
It depends on the field size and the slate. A common approach is to keep most of the roster solid and popular, then add one or two low-owned spots with real upside, so you have a path to separate without giving up too many points.
What's the difference between contrarian and leverage?
Contrarian describes being different from the field. Leverage describes being different in a way that's actually profitable, because the play lands in winning lineups more often than the field rosters it. A contrarian play without leverage is just unpopular.
