What Is a Game Stack in DFS?

A game stack is a group of players from both teams in the same game, built to capture a high-scoring matchup where both sides keep putting up points.
Why It Matters
When both teams answer each other's scores, the fantasy points pile up on both sides, so a game stack can win a tournament in one matchup. If the game turns slow or one-sided, much of the lineup fails together.

Example
Say a game has the highest total on the slate and a tight spread, which tells you the market expects both teams to score a lot. You build a lineup with three players from one team and two from the other. If the game turns into a back-and-forth shootout, five of your roster spots are scoring from the same matchup.
Target games where the spread is close as well as the total high. A high total with a lopsided spread can turn into a blowout where only one side keeps scoring.

Common Questions
How many players should be in a game stack?
It varies by sport. In the NFL, a common game stack is a quarterback, one or two of his pass catchers and one or two players from the other team. In the NBA, three or four players from one game is typical. The right size depends on how much you trust that matchup.
Do game stacks work in MLB?
Sometimes. Two offenses in a hitter-friendly park facing weak starting pitchers can both score a lot. Baseball game stacks are less common than in football, though, because one team scoring runs does nothing to force the other team to score.
Should a game stack include a defense or goalie from the same game?
Usually not. A defense or goalie scores by holding the offenses down, which is the opposite of what a game stack needs. If you like a shootout enough to game stack it, roster your defense or goalie from a different game.
