Balanced Build

What Is a Balanced Build in DFS?

Last updated September 22, 2026 by Ship It Nation

A balanced build spreads salary fairly evenly across a lineup, using mostly mid-priced players instead of a few stars and several minimum-salary players.

Why It Matters

A balanced lineup avoids depending on any one cheap player, which gives it a steadier floor. It can lack the ceiling of top stars, but when the field goes top-heavy, a balanced build is a natural way to be different.

Example

Say an NHL slate has no injury news and few cheap skaters on top lines. Instead of forcing in two stars and several near-minimum fourth-liners, you roster mostly mid-priced skaters on second lines and power play units. No single cheap player can sink the lineup, and if the field crowds into the same stars, you're different too.

Pro tip

Go balanced when the slate lacks trustworthy cheap plays. Forcing stars and scrubs without real value just fills your lineup with players who have no role.

Common Questions

Is a balanced build good for cash games?

Often, yes. Spreading salary across solid mid-priced players reduces the chance that one bad cheap play drags down your score. When there's clear cheap value on the slate, though, most cash lineups still use it and drift toward a stars and scrubs structure.

Does a balanced build have a lower ceiling?

It can. Top stars often produce the slate's biggest individual scores, and a balanced lineup usually rosters fewer of them. The trade-off is fewer weak spots, and in tournaments it can still win if several mid-priced players outscore their salaries.

How do you know when to go balanced?

Look at the cheap tier first. If near-minimum players lack secure roles, or the mid-priced tier holds most of the slate's value, a balanced build fits. It's also a good way to be different when projected ownership shows the field piling into stars.
