What Is Exposure in DFS?

Exposure is the percentage of your lineups in a contest, or across a slate, that include a particular player, team or stack.
Why It Matters
Being more exposed than the field to a player you like gains ground when he hits. Capping exposure spreads risk so one bust does not ruin every lineup. Plan exposure across the whole slate, not lineup by lineup.
Example
Say you enter 20 lineups in a NASCAR tournament, and a driver starting 32nd appears in 12 of them. Your exposure to him is 60%. If his projected ownership is 30%, you're twice as heavy on him as the field. When he drives into the top 10, those 12 lineups gain ground on the 70% of entries without him, but if he wrecks early, 12 of your lineups take the hit.
Set exposure caps before you build, not after. Decide the most you're willing to have on any one player, then let your lineups fill in around those limits.

Common Questions
What's the difference between exposure and ownership?
Exposure is how often a player appears in your own lineups. Ownership is how often he appears across the whole field. Comparing the two shows where you're overweight or underweight relative to everyone else in the contest.
How much exposure should you have to one player?
It depends on how much you like him compared with the field. Many multi-entry players go well above projected ownership on their favorite plays and below it on chalk they think is overrated. Capping any single player keeps one bust from sinking most of your lineups.
Does exposure matter in single-entry contests?
Within one contest, no, since a player is either in your lineup or not. It still matters across a slate. If you play several single-entry contests with the same core players, your overall exposure to them is 100%, and so is your risk.
