What Is Roster Construction in DFS?
Last updated October 2, 2026 by Ship It Nation
Roster construction is how you organize a DFS lineup within its salary cap and roster rules. It includes where you spend or save, which positions you prioritize, and how your players fit together.
Why It Matters
In college football formats with a superflex spot, which can accept a quarterback, your quarterback budget can shape much of the lineup. Compare the rushing role of a cheaper quarterback with the passing production you sacrifice. College depth-chart uncertainty and the risk of starters leaving lopsided games also matter when evaluating the cheap players needed to complete a build.

Example
Say your college contest allows a second quarterback, and you are comparing an $8,800 passer with a $6,300 quarterback who regularly runs the ball. The cheaper option frees $2,500 for a receiver upgrade. Compare both quarterback-receiver combinations, including expected playing time, rather than assuming either two expensive quarterbacks or the cheapest available starter is automatically best.

Common Questions
Should cash and GPP lineups use different roster construction?
Often, yes. In cash contests, prioritize projected points and dependable roles when comparing builds. In GPPs, also consider how your players can succeed together and how often opponents will use the same combination. An unusual construction still needs enough scoring potential to justify its trade-offs.
Does roster construction change between DraftKings and FanDuel?
Yes. Differences in pricing, scoring, salary caps, and eligible roster positions can change which combinations make sense. Evaluate the available players and rules for each specific contest rather than transferring a construction from one site and assuming it remains strong.
Can an optimizer handle roster construction for you?
Partly. An optimizer builds lineups according to its objective, projections, and constraints; some also incorporate ownership or simulations. It can compare constructions, but your settings determine what it considers. Review the resulting combinations rather than assuming an optimized lineup reflects every strategic concern.
