What Is Showdown in DFS?
Last updated October 4, 2026 by Ship It Nation
NFL Showdown lets you select players from one football game, including eligible quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, tight ends, kickers and team defenses. Your Captain or MVP receives the contest's scoring multiplier.
Why It Matters
A receiver Captain often pairs naturally with his quarterback because both score on completed passes and passing touchdowns. A quarterback Captain can benefit when touchdowns are distributed among multiple receivers. Rushing quarterbacks, running backs, kickers and defenses offer different ways to build around how you expect the game to unfold.

Example
Say you expect a close game with substantial passing production. You use a receiver at Captain, his quarterback and another receiver from the same team, then add the opposing quarterback, an opposing receiver and a cheap eligible player. The construction bets on passing production from both sides, while the Captain choice bets on one receiver capturing a large share.
Compare complete lineups with different players in the multiplier slot. Leaving salary unused can reduce duplication, but do not sacrifice meaningful scoring potential just to make your lineup unusual.

Common Questions
Does the Captain or MVP cost more?
Yes, in DraftKings Captain Mode and FanDuel's current six-slot Single-Game format. Your Captain or MVP costs 1.5 times the player's regular salary and scores 1.5 times their fantasy points. The other five slots use regular salaries and scoring, so compare what each multiplier choice leaves for the rest of your lineup.
Do Showdown lineups need players from both teams?
Yes. DraftKings Showdown and FanDuel Single-Game contests require representation from both teams. That does not mean every possible team split is legal: sport-specific roster restrictions can also apply. Check the contest's lineup requirements before building heavily around one team.
Should the highest-projected player always be my Captain?
No. You need the strongest complete lineup, not simply the highest individual projection in the multiplier slot. A cheaper Captain can free salary for stronger supporting players. In tournaments, also consider realistic ceiling outcomes and duplication, but low ownership alone does not make someone a good Captain.
