Showdown (Captain and MVP)
What Is Showdown in DFS?
Last updated October 4, 2026 by Ship It Nation
Showdown is a single-game DFS format where you build a lineup under a salary cap. In Captain or MVP formats, you assign one player to a special roster slot that multiplies their fantasy points and can increase their salary.
Why It Matters
Your Captain or MVP choice changes both your scoring potential and what you can afford elsewhere. Because everyone selects from the same small player pool, identical lineups are common and split prizes when they tie. In tournaments, evaluate the entire lineup's scoring ceiling, how its players can succeed together, and how often opponents will build the same combination.

Example
Say you enter a DraftKings NFL Showdown contest with a $50,000 salary cap. A quarterback with a $10,800 flex salary costs $16,200 at Captain, and his 24 fantasy points become 36. You complete the six-player lineup with two of his receivers, his running back, an opposing receiver and the opposing kicker, keeping the total within the cap.
Compare complete lineups with different players in the multiplier slot. Leaving salary unused can reduce duplication, but do not sacrifice meaningful scoring potential just to make your lineup unusual.

Common Questions
Does the Captain or MVP cost more?
Yes, in DraftKings Captain Mode and FanDuel's current six-slot Single-Game format. Your Captain or MVP costs 1.5 times the player's regular salary and scores 1.5 times their fantasy points. The other five slots use regular salaries and scoring, so compare what each multiplier choice leaves for the rest of your lineup.
Do Showdown lineups need players from both teams?
Yes. DraftKings Showdown and FanDuel Single-Game contests require representation from both teams. That does not mean every possible team split is legal: sport-specific roster restrictions can also apply. Check the contest's lineup requirements before building heavily around one team.
Should the highest-projected player always be my Captain?
No. You need the strongest complete lineup, not simply the highest individual projection in the multiplier slot. A cheaper Captain can free salary for stronger supporting players. In tournaments, also consider realistic ceiling outcomes and duplication, but low ownership alone does not make someone a good Captain.
