Classic Contests
What Are Classic Contests in DFS?
Last updated October 19, 2026 by Ship It Nation
Classic contests are the standard salary-cap DFS format: you select a full lineup from a designated set of games or events within a fixed budget. Roster requirements and scoring depend on the sport and site.
Why It Matters
Classic describes how you build your roster, not how prizes are paid: the format can support head-to-head contests, double-ups and tournaments. You must balance each salary decision against the remaining roster spots, while choosing combinations that fit the contest's payout structure.

Example
Say you enter an NFL Classic tournament covering several Sunday games. You pair a quarterback with one of his receivers, then choose running backs, other receivers, a tight end and a defense from the available teams. A cheaper starter helps you afford an expensive running back, but you still compare whether that combination improves the whole lineup.
Check the included games before building. A Classic contest can cover a small afternoon slate rather than the full day, changing your available players and lineup options.

Common Questions
What is the difference between Classic and Showdown in DFS?
For NFL, Classic draws players from multiple games, while Showdown draws them from one game. Classic uses position-specific roster requirements; Showdown uses a different roster structure with a boosted scoring slot. Check the site's rules for the exact roster, salary treatment and scoring.
Are Classic contests cash games or tournaments?
They can be either. Classic identifies the lineup format, while cash games and tournaments describe the competition and payout structure. You can build a Classic lineup for a head-to-head contest, a double-up or a large tournament, but those contests reward different approaches.
Does FanDuel have Classic contests?
Yes, FanDuel offers standard salary-cap contests with the same basic approach, although the contest labels can differ. You choose a full roster from the listed player pool within a budget. Use FanDuel's own salaries, scoring and roster requirements rather than transferring DraftKings assumptions.
