What Is Late Swap in DFS?
Last updated October 10, 2026 by Ship It Nation
In NFL contests with late swap, you can change unlocked afternoon or evening players after earlier games begin. Only games included in that contest's player pool are available.
Why It Matters
Check inactive-player announcements for later games and preserve positional flexibility before early players lock. When your roster has a FLEX position, placing a later eligible player there can keep more replacement positions available. Tournament decisions should account for remaining quarterback-receiver combinations and opponents' unfinished lineups.
Example
Say you have an early running back and an afternoon running back in a lineup with a FLEX position. Before lock, you place the early player at running back and the afternoon player at FLEX. If later news changes your plan, that unlocked FLEX spot can accept any replacement position allowed by the contest, provided the salary fits.
Before the first games lock, identify affordable backup combinations for your later players. Check that each combination fits the open positions, then confirm your saved changes in every affected entry.

Common Questions
Can I late swap a player whose game has started?
No. Once a player's game locks, you cannot remove him or move him to another roster position. You also cannot add a replacement whose game has locked. Follow the site's displayed lock status, since a scheduled lock can arrive before play actually begins.
Do all DraftKings and FanDuel contests allow late swap?
No. Availability depends on the site, sport, and contest format. DraftKings does not offer it for golf, NASCAR, or MMA. In a standard single-game Showdown, every player locks together, so you cannot change the lineup afterward. Check the specific contest's lineup-edit rules before entering.
Should I late swap if my lineup is losing?
Sometimes. First consider how many players you and your opponents have left, their likely scores, and the payouts you are chasing. A low current rank alone does not justify a change. If you need a different outcome to catch up, a less popular combination with realistic upside can make sense.
