Minutes Projection

What Is a Minutes Projection in DFS?

Last updated October 20, 2026 by Ship It Nation

A minutes projection estimates how much playing time a player will receive in a game. You use it to estimate opportunities for fantasy production, not as a guarantee of playing time or points.

Why It Matters

A player's salary may not reflect a recent increase in expected playing time, giving you more opportunity for the same cost. Multiplying projected minutes by expected fantasy points per minute gives you a starting estimate, but the production rate can change with the role. Compare both the expected minutes and how uncertain they are before treating a player as strong value.

Example

Say a bench forward is expected to play 22 minutes and produce 1.1 fantasy points per minute, giving you an estimate of 24.2 points. An injury moves his expected playing time to 32 minutes, raising that estimate to 35.2 if his production rate stays the same. Before treating the unchanged salary as a bargain, you check whether the new role supports both the extra minutes and that scoring rate.

Pro tip

Ask what would make the player lose minutes. If your lineup only works when he gets the most optimistic playing time estimate, reconsider the pick.

Common Questions

How are NBA minutes projections made?

They estimate a player's place in the expected rotation using recent playing time, available teammates and coaching decisions. You then account for restrictions, matchup adjustments and possible game outcomes. Starting status helps, but the substitution pattern and who finishes close games also matter.

Does starting guarantee more minutes in NBA DFS?

No. A player can start and still play fewer minutes than a reserve, especially when the team changes its lineup for certain matchups. Check the expected rotation and closing group rather than assigning a full starter's workload based on the lineup announcement alone.

How should you handle a minutes restriction in DFS?

Use the reported restriction to limit your playing time estimate, while allowing for the possibility that the player plays less. A restriction describes a planned limit, not guaranteed minutes. Compare the resulting fantasy projection with salary rather than automatically ruling the player out.
