What Is a Team Total in DFS?

Last updated October 22, 2026 by Ship It Nation

In NBA DFS, a team total estimates how many real basketball points a team will score, usually from the game total and point spread. It does not include fantasy production from rebounds, assists or defensive statistics.

Why It Matters

A high team total can reflect fast play, efficient scoring or both, but individual minutes and involvement determine who benefits. Consider the spread when assessing the risk of starters losing late minutes. A cheap player with an expanded role can remain valuable on a lower-total team.

Example

Say two teams each have an implied total of 118 points. One is favored by one point, while the other is favored by 14. With similar salaries and roles, the closer matchup may offer more confidence in late minutes. Still, an inexpensive starter on the bigger favorite could be useful if his expected workload supports the price.

Pro tip

Recheck team totals after major news, then ask which players actually benefit. If your projections already reflect the change, avoid adding another automatic boost.

Common Questions

How do you calculate an implied team total?

In football and basketball, subtract a team's signed point spread from the game total, then divide by two. With a 48 total, a favorite at -6 gets 27 and an underdog at +6 gets 21. Baseball and hockey require posted team totals or a model using betting odds.

Is an implied team total the same as a sportsbook team total?

Not exactly. An implied team total is calculated from other betting lines; a posted team total is an over/under offered on one team's scoring. The posted line and its payout odds can differ from the calculated figure. Neither guarantees a score or represents a precise statistical average.

Should you always stack the team with the highest total?

No. A high total indicates a favorable scoring environment, but salary, ownership and how the offense distributes production still matter. A lower-total stack can be more attractive when its price and expected popularity justify the tradeoff. Low ownership alone does not make it better.
