Three-Max

What Is a Three-Max Contest in DFS?

Last updated September 22, 2026 by Ship It Nation

A three-max contest lets each user enter up to three lineups. It is a small step up from single-entry.

Why It Matters

Three lineups let you hedge one key decision, such as a different stack or a different expensive player in each. Avoid entering three near-copies, which just triples the same bet. Fields are friendlier than max-entry contests, so every entry has more value.

Example

Say you enter a three-max NFL tournament and cannot decide between the two most popular quarterback stacks. Instead of copying one build three times, lineup one stacks the first game, lineup two stacks the second, and lineup three uses a lower-owned quarterback from a game the field is skipping. Instead of one outcome deciding all three entries, each lineup is built for a different way the slate could play out.

Pro tip

Give each of your three lineups a clear role. Make sure they differ in at least one major decision, like the main stack or the most expensive player.

Common Questions

Is a three-max contest better than single-entry?

Not better, just different. Three entries let you cover a key decision two or three ways, but you spend more to enter and other users can bring three too. Players who build one lineup per slate usually get more value from single-entry.

Do I have to enter all three lineups in a three-max?

No. Three is the limit, not a requirement. You can enter one or two lineups and compete for the same prizes, though some users in the field will use all three.

How different should my three lineups be?

Different enough that they do not all win or lose together. Varying the main game stack or the highest-priced player usually does that. Changing only a cheap player or two leaves you with three versions of the same bet.
