What Is a Player Pool in DFS?
Last updated October 23, 2026 by Ship It Nation
A player pool is the set of players you consider using in your DFS lineups for a slate, the games or events included in a contest. The term can also mean everyone available to select in that contest.
Why It Matters
Build your NFL tournament pool around usable quarterback and pass-catcher combinations, with opposing players available when you want a game stack. Include enough running back, tight end and defense options at different salaries to complete those builds. A shortlist of individually appealing players can still fail to support the combinations you intend to enter.

Example
Say you are building five NFL tournament lineups. You shortlist three quarterbacks, several receivers who catch their passes, and running backs, tight ends and defenses at different prices. One expensive receiver prevents your preferred combinations from fitting, so you replace him with a cheaper option. Your pool contains the candidates for all five builds, not five separate lists of required picks.
Keep a replacement beside each uncertain player, noting the salary and position you need. Recheck those alternatives when news changes so your shortlist still produces usable lineups.

Common Questions
How many players should be in my DFS player pool?
There is no fixed number. Your pool needs enough candidates to build the entries you want within the contest's salary and roster limits. More entries can justify more options, but adding names just to cover every outcome can weaken the choices you actually prefer.
Should my cash game and tournament player pools be different?
They can overlap, but they do not need to be identical. For cash games, emphasize projected production, salary value and dependable opportunity. For tournaments, also consider high-scoring outcomes, useful player combinations and expected popularity. A player can fit one approach without earning a place in both pools.
When should I update my DFS player pool?
Update it whenever new information changes whether you would roster someone. Injuries, starting lineups, weather and withdrawals can add or remove candidates. Revisit affected combinations as well as individual names, and make lineup changes only where the contest's lock rules still allow them.
