What Is an Optimal Lineup in DFS?
Last updated October 26, 2026 by Ship It Nation
An optimal lineup is a legal roster that maximizes fantasy points under the salary cap and roster rules. After games, it uses actual scores; before games, a projected optimal uses estimated scores and any lineup restrictions you set.
Why It Matters
In NFL, examine whether an optimal's quarterback and receivers benefited from the same passing touchdowns, and whether a running back and team defense benefited from the same game script. Those relationships can inform future builds, but an actual optimal can still contain combinations you would not deliberately target before kickoff.
Example
Say the highest-scoring legal lineup on a football slate finishes with 240 points, while the winning contest entry scores 218. The optimal includes a cheap receiver who catches two touchdowns, freeing salary for productive players elsewhere. You can study the salary allocation, but those unexpected touchdowns do not prove that receiver was a strong pick before kickoff.
When reviewing an optimal, replace its most surprising scorer with a realistic pregame alternative. Check whether the remaining construction still offered a credible path to winning your contest.

Common Questions
Does the winning DFS lineup have to be the optimal lineup?
No. A contest winner only needs to outscore the other submitted entries. The actual optimal is the highest score any legal lineup could have achieved, whether anyone entered it or not. The winner can match it, but there can also be a substantial gap.
Should I play the optimizer's highest-projected lineup?
Not automatically. It maximizes the projections you supplied within your settings, rather than guaranteeing the best tournament outcome. Similar inputs can produce duplicate entries, and maximizing average points does not account for every path to first place. Check the assumptions, player combinations and contest fit before entering it.
What does optimal lineup percentage mean?
It usually means the percentage of simulated slate outcomes in which a player appears in the highest-scoring legal lineup. It depends on the model and lineup rules. A rate above projected ownership can flag a tournament candidate, but it does not by itself prove that using the player is profitable.
