What Is Underweight in DFS?

Last updated October 15, 2026 by Ship It Nation

You are underweight in DFS when a player, team stack or lineup combination appears in a smaller percentage of your entries than in the contest field's entries.

Why It Matters

Track your pitcher exposure separately from your exposure to team stacks, meaning groups of hitters from the same offense. Being underweight on one popular hitter does not necessarily make you underweight on his team's stacks if you frequently use other hitters from that batting order.

Example

Say you enter 20 lineups in a tournament and use a popular running back in four of them. Your exposure, the share of your entries containing him, is 20%; his ownership across the contest is 40%. You are underweight by 20 percentage points, with four lineups using him and 16 relying on other options.

Pro tip

Compare the same contest, format and roster slot. Use projected ownership before lock, then check actual ownership afterward to see whether your intended underweight stance held.

Common Questions

Is being underweight the same as fading a player?

No. Being underweight can mean using a player in some lineups, just less often than the field does. A full fade means using him in none, which is also underweight if his contest ownership is above zero.

How do I calculate whether I am underweight?

Divide your entries containing the selection by your total entries, then multiply by 100. Compare that percentage with its contest ownership. If your exposure is 15% and ownership is 35%, you are underweight by 20 percentage points.

Can I be underweight with just one lineup?

Yes, by leaving out a player who has positive ownership. With one entry, your exposure to each player is either 0% or 100%, so you cannot take a partial position such as 20% exposure within that contest.
