Pass Funnel

What Is a Pass Funnel in DFS?

Last updated October 23, 2026 by Ship It Nation

A pass funnel is a football defense that encourages opponents to throw because passing offers a better matchup than running. It is typically stronger against the run than the pass, but extra passing does not guarantee success.

Why It Matters

You can use a pass funnel to identify potential passing volume for a quarterback and his receivers, but their offense must be willing and able to exploit it. Check salaries, receiving roles and expected game conditions before choosing a stack. Running backs who catch passes can benefit too, so the label alone is not a reason to avoid the entire backfield.

Example

Say a defense consistently limits rushing efficiency, allows efficient passing and faces frequent throws even when games are close. Its next opponent normally leans on the run but has a capable quarterback and two receivers who command most targets. You give that passing stack a closer look, while checking whether the offense actually changes its approach against similar defenses.

Pro tip

Check opponent strength and passing rates when scores are close. Repeatedly facing pass-heavy offenses or teams chasing a deficit can make a defense look like a funnel without revealing a dependable matchup advantage.

Common Questions

How do you identify a pass funnel defense?

Compare its run and pass efficiency allowed with how often opponents choose to throw. Look across several games and account for opponent quality and score. High passing yards allowed alone can reflect extra attempts rather than weak pass defense.

Should you avoid running backs facing a pass funnel?

No. A back with a substantial receiving role can benefit from additional passing, while a runner can still succeed through heavy workload or goal-line opportunities. Reduce expectations only when the matchup actually changes his projected opportunities or efficiency.

Do pass funnels matter in college football DFS?

Yes. They help you identify where an offense might attack, but a run-focused college team may keep running despite the matchup. Check its passing ability and play-calling tendencies, and account for opponent strength before trusting defensive rankings.
